James Bond is one of the most interesting secret agent franchises of all time. What makes him so interesting is that he has many ways of performing the task of keeping himself and his mission secret. Apart from the gadgets and cool cars, he is a specialist at making himself and his mission secret so that the mission can be completed. There’s a lot of things that make James Bond interesting but, one of the most interesting things about the gospel is that Jesus teaches us to be “secret” in some things…. That’s not a call to not tell other people about the hope that we have in Christ. We of course, are supposed to be bold and courageous as we share our faith with others. In the passage for this week, Jesus on the sermon on the mount, calls his disciples to a way of life that is not dependent on what other people think of them. In the sermon on the mount this week, we learn about Jesus ‘s teaching on secrecy when it comes to giving, prayer and fasting. Read Matthew 6:1-18 in preparation.
